a step-by-step recovery protocol for dancers, footballers, and weekend walkers alike.
the anatomy in 30 seconds
the fifth metatarsal is the long bone running along the outside of the foot. fractures here come in three flavours, and they each heal very differently.
the three types
avulsion (styloid) fractures heal in most people within 6–8 weeks. mid-shaft ("jones") fractures are slower, often 8–12 weeks, with higher non-union rates. stress fractures need the most careful management and sometimes surgery.
the 6-week playbook
weeks 1–2: immobilisation and offloading. weeks 3–4: progressive weight-bearing in a boot, with active ankle mobility work. weeks 5–6: return to cushioned trainers, pool running, and targeted calf and intrinsic foot work.
common mistakes
returning to impact too early. using crutches too long. skipping the strength work once the pain settles. the fracture heals long before the tissue around it does.
